Who is Colleen Jo Matarico? What did she do?

Colleen Jo Matarico, 44, is a former Los Angeles County middle school teacher in Los Angeles. She met the 13-year-old boy when he was 12 at the school where she used to teach.

She was also accused of giving the boy marijuana and reportedly told him she planned to leave her husband for him.

She was arrested in November 2024, according to reports cbs newsThe extent of her obsession with the boy had become apparent during earlier court proceedings. Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson cited alleged Instagram messages between Matarico and the victim. “In the messages between her and the minor, she indicated that she was in love with him, that he was the only person she would go to jail with… and that he was her meth,” Anson told the court.

Matarico was initially charged with eight felonies, including five counts of lewd conduct with a child under 14, two counts of lewd conduct with a child 14 or 15 years old, and one count of furnishing a controlled substance to a minor, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

But she later pleaded not guilty to two counts of lewd or lascivious conduct towards a child under 14. The remaining six charges against her were dropped. She was also ordered not to contact the victim in any way, including electronically and through third parties.

What happened in court?

When the 10-year sentence was announced on Monday, Matarico smiled, laughed and shook his head, the New York Post reported. When asked during the hearing if she understood the sentence, the only words she said were “good morning” and “yes.”

She sat next to her attorney, Leonard Levine, who spoke quietly to her before bailiffs escorted her out of the courtroom for sentencing.
