The study focused on nine fossils found in eastern China, all belonging to Anchiornis, a small feathered dinosaur that lived about 160 million years ago. Scientists already knew this species was unusual because it had long feathers not only on its arms but also on its legs. Researchers believe these dinosaurs were part of a larger group called penosaurs, which later gave rise to modern birds.Feather fossils are extremely rare. Feathers decay quickly, so it is unusual to find them in good condition. Finding fossils that still show color patterns is another level entirely. It is reported that the feathers of Anchiornis are mostly white, with distinct black tips on the edges of the wings. Scientists say these patterns help them identify which feathers have aged and which are still growing.Dr. Yosef Kiat of Tel Aviv University explained that feathers grow for several weeks before turning into dead matter, Earth.com reported. Over time, they wear out and are replaced in a process called moult.Birds that rely heavily on flight typically moult carefully and symmetrically. They cannot lose too many flight feathers at once, otherwise flying will become difficult. Flightless birds tend to molt more chaotically because staying in the air is no longer necessary.

How these ancient feathers baffled researchers

The preserved black spots form a surprisingly clear image of dinosaur wing feathers. The scientists noticed that some of the newer feathers did not line up correctly with other feathers.This uneven growth pattern seems to indicate that the dinosaurs shed their skin randomly, rather than in a controlled sequence. The moult pattern strongly suggests that Anchiornis Huxleyi, despite its wing-like structure and elaborate feathers, was essentially flightless, the researchers said.For decades, feathers and wings were often seen as signs of the steady progress of modern birds. This fossil hints that evolution may have been much messier. Some dinosaurs may have attempted flight, with partial success, but later lost this ability as their environment changed.

Rare fossil reveals hidden side of evolution

The discovery could reshape how scientists think about the origins of bird flight. Experts believe that feathered dinosaurs may have made multiple attempts to evolve the ability to fly. Some lineages survived and improved. Others may stagnate or regress.Today’s modern birds provide similar examples. Ostriches, emus, and penguins are all descended from flying ancestors, but they no longer fly themselves. Penguins even turn their wings into underwater tools.Still, it’s rare to see evidence of it in such ancient fossils. Especially by retaining the feather color rather than just the bones.
