Chicago student, 18, kicked out of graduation ceremony, diploma rejected after 'split' on stage: 'Really hurt my feelings'

A Chicago high school graduate said she was kicked out of the ceremony and denied her diploma after an argument broke out while celebrating on stage while receiving her diploma, Fox32 reports.Tyvion Campbell, 18, recently graduated from the Chicago Institute of Technology. She claims school officials stopped her from receiving her diploma after she performed a dance move at the school’s graduation ceremony at the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Chicago. At this moment, family and friends in the audience cheered. However, things turned ugly when Campbell said she realized she didn’t receive her diploma after taking the stage.“I tried to get my diploma, but I didn’t get it,” Campbell said. She added: “I was confused at first. I thought they had my name mixed up.”The 18-year-old graduated with a 3.5 GPA and plans to study business administration at Georgia State University. She said school leaders later confronted her about the incident.According to Campbell, principal Zataya Shackelford criticized her for drawing attention to herself during the ceremony.Campbell said: “Miss Principal [Zataya] Shackelford told me I needed to find a way to make amends for what I had done. This was supposed to be a moment of celebration and I created it for myself. “Campbell said she was escorted from the ceremony shortly after, preventing her from enjoying the rest of the event with her classmates.“It’s disappointing,” she said. She added: “It really hurt my feelings. I cried and couldn’t even move on to graduation.”The graduate claimed she still had not received her diploma following the incident. The controversy caused an uproar online, with supporters questioning whether the punishment was too harsh. Campbell also argued that the school had no specific policy prohibiting students from performing splits or similar dance moves while crossing the stage. The incident is the latest graduation ceremony controversy to hit U.S. headlines. Earlier this year, Leen Hijaz, a senior at Clayton High School in North Carolina, was interrupted during her commencement speech when she criticized immigration enforcement policies.
