New Delhi: As India ramps up efforts to establish a rules-based framework for artificial intelligence amid rapid technological advancement and increasing global scrutiny, the Center has set up a dedicated expert body to bridge the gap between policy ambitions and technological complexity.The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formed the Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), a standing advisory group that will support the newly formed Artificial Intelligence Governance and Economics Group (AIGEG) in shaping India’s AI governance architecture. The move comes as governments around the world struggle to regulate rapidly evolving artificial intelligence systems while balancing innovation and safeguards.According to an official memorandum, TPEC will provide “expert technical, policy and strategic expertise” to make informed decisions on regulatory design, global engagement and emerging artificial intelligence capabilities.The group, chaired by MeitY Secretary, brings together experts from academia, industry and digital policy, including representatives from IIT Madras, IIT Gandhinagar, National Software Corporation of India (Nasscom), Data Security Council of India (DSCI) and MAIT.The committee’s mandate includes informing AIGEG on “matters of national importance,” identifying risks and regulatory gaps, tracking global policy developments and advising on India’s diplomatic positioning on AI governance.Within the broader governance structure, AIGEG will guide strategic direction and inter-ministerial coordination, while TPEC will translate complex technical developments into actionable policy inputs.Officials said the framework aims to ensure a “dynamic, adaptive and future-proof approach” to AI regulation that is in line with India’s socio-economic context while keeping pace with global standards.The institutionalization of expert-led advisory mechanisms signals a shift towards more structured and anticipatory governance, as India positions itself as a major AI adopter and rule-setter in global forums.
