New Delhi: Artificial intelligence will either amplify or weaken India’s demographic advantage, depending on the choices made now, chief economic adviser V Anantha Nageswaran said on Monday, calling for concerted national action. Addressing a virtual address at the ‘Employability in the Age of AI’ session at the AI Impact Summit, Nageswaran said the adoption of technology must be deliberately aligned with mass employability rather than letting it develop on its own. “This doesn’t happen because of drift,” he said. “This requires political will, national capacity and national commitment to align technology adoption with mass employment capabilities.” He sees AI as a key moment in India’s growth journey and believes the outcome will depend on execution. “India can become the first large society where a rich population and machine intelligence reinforce each other rather than destroy each other. The results will not be accidental,” he said. He said the path to co-creating prosperity with AI starts with strengthening basic learning and imparting skills to improve employability in a technology-driven economy.
