“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Elder W. Mark Bassett, a General Authority Seventy who had served since April 2016,” the church said in a statement. “Elder Bassett passed away on May 11, 2026, from a traumatic brain injury. He was with family in St. George, Utah, at the time of the incident.”

Who is William Mark Bassett?
At the time of his death, Bassett was responsible for the Church’s worldwide missionary activities during a period of major expansion. Under his guidance, the mission reported a record-breaking number of young people choosing to serve, demonstrating a renewed enthusiasm for the church’s outreach efforts.
Just a few days before his death, on May 5, Bassett Devotional training at the Provo Missionary Training Center. He encouraged missionaries to teach the teachings of Christ and “invite everyone to come – and do what you can to help them enter this beautiful door that leads to eternal life.” The message was recorded on video and widely circulated, and now serves as one of his last public testimonies.
William Mark Bassett was born on August 14, 1966, in Carmichael, California, to Edwina Acker and William Lynn Bassett. The middle child of five siblings, he grew up in a gospel-centered home that emphasized faith through small, consistent experiences. He often credits his parents with helping him build his personal faith foundation.
Bassett’s guidance in the mission ministry is consistent with significant advancements such as increased use of technology, service missions, and initiatives designed to help seekers of truth discover the “Strait Gate” of eternal life. He placed great emphasis on teaching fundamental doctrine and ordinances, including baptism and confirmation.
After news of his death was announced, church leaders, missionaries and members around the world paid tribute to Bassett’s humility, kindness and commitment to service.
