Comments Off on Carmelo Anthony case: $13 Walmart knife used to kill Austin Metcalf at Texas high school track meet, court says

The knife used in the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf was a $13 Walmart camping multi-tool, according to details provided by the Collin County District Attorney.

The weapon was identified as an Ozark Trail 6-in-1 multi-tool, sold by Walmart as an inexpensive camping accessory. It includes a serrated blade, flashlight and glass breaker, and is promoted as “ideal for those who hunt, camp or travel frequently,” according to the product listing.

Officials said the knife, which has a 3.5-inch blade, is legal to carry under Texas law but is prohibited on Frisco Independent School District property where the incident occurred.

Commemorating a confrontation at a high school track meet

The stabbing occurred at a track meet in April 2025 at Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas. Austin Metcalf and his brother confronted Carmelo Anthony after he sat inside the team tent and asked him to leave, according to court testimony and reports cited by the New York Post.

The conflict allegedly escalated after Anthony repeatedly refused requests to relocate. At one point, he reportedly told Austin, “Just touch me and you’ll know.”

When Austin pushed him, Anthony allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest.

Austin Metcalf suffered a two-inch gash to his chest that pierced his heart, authorities said. The 17-year-old football player, who weighed about 200 pounds, lost consciousness before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Weapons recovered after suspect escapes

Investigators testified that Anthony ran away after the stabbing and later discarded the knife. Frisco Police Department School Resource Officer Jacob Shalz found the multi-function tool and found it partially open.

Schaltz also demonstrated in court how the knife could be opened with a flicking motion, indicating how quickly the attack could have occurred. He noted that Anthony may have suffered a small cut to his finger during the incident, consistent with handling the blade.

According to the New York Post, the case ended with Carmelo Anthony being found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
