Right now, the leading candidates to watch include Democrat Xavier Becerra, Democrat Tom Steyer and Republican Steve Hilton. Notably, the state has eliminated partisan primaries in 2010 in favor of “jungle primaries.”

In the former, candidates of the same party first fight candidates of the other party in the gubernatorial race. In a “jungle primary,” all voters are given a full list of candidates, and the top two finishers advance to the general election, regardless of party.

This is when polls close in the California gubernatorial election.

California gubernatorial election: When polls close

Ballots for the California gubernatorial poll must be cast in person or returned by 8pm PT or 11pm ET on Election Day. Voting starts at 7am.

When the polls close, a staff member will come out and announce, “Polls are over,” CBS News reported. The secretary of state’s office said if someone is in line before 8 p.m., they can still vote.

Ballots must be delivered to the polling station or ballot drop box by 8pm on Election Day. At this point, a poll worker stood at the end of the line and informed those in line that they could not vote because the polling station was closed.

Court orders can cause polling stations to extend voting hours. However, voting is conducted during this period using provisional ballots, which are different from normal ballots.

Xavier Becerra, Tom Steyer, Steve Hilton take center stage

With Swalwell out, a number of other players are starting to take the spotlight. According to the Associated Press, Xavier Becerra, Tom Steyer and Steve Hilton are the leading candidates in California’s gubernatorial election.

Xavier Becerra: He has 35 years of experience in California and national politics. He served in President Joe Biden’s Cabinet as secretary of Health and Human Services. After Swalwell dropped out, Becerra solidified support from California Democratic powerhouses such as Planned Parenthood and the LGBTQ rights group Equality California, according to the Associated Press.

Tom Steyer: He is the founder of a San Francisco hedge fund and spends his own money to aggressively advertise in the campaign, according to the Associated Press. He has never held public office and has never been known as a donor to Democratic groups and politicians working to combat climate change. He reportedly ran as a progressive populist and was surprisingly supported by Our Revolution, a group aligned with Bernie Sanders.

Steve Hilton: Hilton has received the endorsement of President Donald Trump. He is a conservative commentator and former host of Fox News. Hilton advised former British Prime Minister David Cameron. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale have both donated to Hilton’s campaign.
