With Swalwell out, a number of other players are starting to take the spotlight. According to the Associated Press, Xavier Becerra, Tom Steyer and Steve Hilton are the leading candidates in California’s gubernatorial election.
Xavier Becerra: He has 35 years of experience in California and national politics. He served in President Joe Biden’s Cabinet as secretary of Health and Human Services. After Swalwell dropped out, Becerra solidified support from California Democratic powerhouses such as Planned Parenthood and the LGBTQ rights group Equality California, according to the Associated Press.
Tom Steyer: He is the founder of a San Francisco hedge fund and spends his own money to aggressively advertise in the campaign, according to the Associated Press. He has never held public office and has never been known as a donor to Democratic groups and politicians working to combat climate change. He reportedly ran as a progressive populist and was surprisingly supported by Our Revolution, a group aligned with Bernie Sanders.
Steve Hilton: Hilton has received the endorsement of President Donald Trump. He is a conservative commentator and former host of Fox News. Hilton advised former British Prime Minister David Cameron. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale have both donated to Hilton’s campaign.
