Harlan was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Marquette University in 1958. He then served as sports publicity director for six years. In 1965, he was hired by the St. Louis Cardinals as head of communications relations and the speakers bureau. However, three years later he ended up becoming their public relations director.

Haaland is a Hall of Famer who led the $295 million renovation of Lambeau Field, ensuring the Packers’ future. He is married to Madeline Keller, and the couple has three children: legendary sportscaster Kevin Harlan, sports agents Brian and Michael.
