Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday announced the first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections to be held on April 9, 2026. The party has retained a name for Sissiborgaon constituency.One of the biggest highlights of the announcement was the inclusion of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the BJP on Wednesday. Bodoloi has been fielded from the high-profile Dipur constituency, marking a high-profile contest in the state capital. Apart from Bordoloi, another former Congress leader and former CPPCC chief Bhupen Kumar Borah was also sent to Bihpuris. He switched to the BJP a few weeks ago.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will seek re-election from Jalukbari, a seat he has held since 2001. According to the seat distribution within the NDA alliance, the BJP will contest 89 seats, while its allies Asom Gana Party (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest 26 and 11 seats respectively. BJP clarifies that UPPL is no longer part of the alliance but will contest 15 seats independently The 126-member Assam Assembly will go to single-phase polls on April 9 and counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
