Bhupembora's U-turn: Assam Congress leader withdraws resignation after talks with party leadership

New Delhi: Assam Congress MP and former state unit president Bhupembora on Monday withdrew his resignation after lengthy discussions with the party’s central leadership, including Rahul Gandhi. Sharing the news of the Congress leader withdrawing his resignation, Congress Party Assam chief Bhanwar Jitendra Singh said that internal differences have been resolved through dialogue.Congress Assam chief Bhanwar Jitendra Singh said the party leadership did not accept Bora’s resignation and reiterated his importance in the organization. He said: “I am grateful to Bupembola for withdrawing his resignation. Senior Congress leader Bhupeng Bora is an important member of the Congress family. He has submitted his resignation to the National Chairman of our party. ““There were sometimes differences of opinion but these were resolved through discussions,” Singh told reporters, adding that Bora had been associated with the party for nearly three decades.

Bora submitted his resignation to the Congress high command earlier in the day citing dissatisfaction with being “ignored” within the state unit and not receiving due recognition. He told reporters after issuing his resignation letter that the decision was not personal but stemmed from concerns for the future of the party. He said, “I submitted my resignation to the Congress high command at 8 o’clock this morning and explained in detail why I was forced to take this stand. This is not a personal decision. I have dedicated 32 years to the party and joined the party in 1994.”He also detailed the reasons for his decision in his communication with his leadership.“This principle is not just personal; it is motivated by concerns for the future of the party. That is why I conveyed all the details to the Congress high command,” he said. The party convinced Bora to stay in power after meeting senior leaders, signaling that the party will try to stay united ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.Bora served as Assam Congress Committee chief from 2021 to 2025 and was replaced by Gaurav Gogoi last year. The two-term legislator had earlier clarified that his resignation was not an attempt to break away from politics and said he had not received any offers from other political parties. The development comes as the Congress prepares for the Assam assembly elections expected to be held in March-April, where it is likely to contest in alliance with other opposition parties. In the 126-member parliament, the PPP currently holds 64 seats, while its allies AGP, UPPL and BPF hold 9, 7 and 3 seats respectively. In the opposition ranks, the Congress has 26 MLAs, followed by AIUDF (15) and CPI(M) (1), as well as one independent.
