Bahrain has officially reopened its airspace, allowing Bahrain International Airport to resume flight operations after days of suspension due to escalating regional tensions. The shutdown, which lasted for several days at the height of the crisis, was implemented as a precautionary measure against missile and drone threats in the Gulf. Authorities rerouted and grounded planes, effectively halting commercial aviation and disrupting regional travel corridors. The decision to reopen was confirmed by Bahrain’s Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, which said the decision was taken following a comprehensive safety review and coordination with regional air traffic authorities.Airport operator Bahrain Airports Company (BAC) said operations were resuming in a phased, controlled manner and security clearances remained a top priority.

National carrier Gulf Air has begun limited scheduled operations, reconnecting Bahrain to more than 15 major destinations in the first phase of recovery. The airline prioritizes routes with high passenger demand, particularly across the Gulf and South Asia. Early resumption destinations include Dubai, Jeddah and Riyadh, as well as long-haul routes to London Heathrow. The main focus is on India and nearby markets, with resumption of flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Hyderabad, Trivandrum and Dhaka. Flights to Islamabad and Lahore in Pakistan and Nairobi in East Africa have also resumed.Officials confirmed that flight frequency remains limited and that flight schedules will be gradually expanded based on operational readiness and airspace stability. Bookings for these routes have reopened, but availability remains limited due to reduced capacity and aircraft repositioning during the shutdown.

Regional conflict disrupts Gulf aviation industry

The temporary closure is part of wider regional aviation disruption caused by rising geopolitical tensions. Bahrain completely closed its skies to commercial traffic, a move that several neighboring countries also viewed as a safety precaution. At the height of the crisis:

  • Commercial flights suspended across Bahrain
  • The plane was diverted to a safer airport
  • Thousands of passengers across Gulf, Europe and South Asia face flight cancellations and delays

Airlines, including Gulf Air, have completely suspended operations until authorities deem the situation safe. The disruption has had a knock-on effect on transit passengers, particularly those traveling between Europe, the Gulf and the Indian subcontinent.

Phased recovery, limited timetable

With airspace now reopened, authorities stressed that operations have not yet returned to normal. Flights are being operated at reduced capacity under strict coordination with civil aviation authorities, defense agencies and regional air traffic controllers.Passengers are advised to:

  • Check flight status before departure
  • Expect schedule changes or delays
  • Arrive early due to extra checks

Gulf Air said it was contacting affected passengers directly and would continue to resume routes in a phased manner. Additional destinations and increased frequencies are expected in the coming days, subject to regional stability. While the reopening marks a key step forward, officials warn the situation remains fluid. The aviation industry is entering a gradual recovery phase rather than a full restart, with airlines balancing demand with ongoing geopolitical risks.
