Cricket Australia has released its international schedule for the 2026-27 season, outlining a strict schedule with a short recovery period ahead of the high-profile Gavaskar Trophy tie at the border with India, which is likely to start in mid or late January.India’s five-Test tour expected to be a decisive phase for an experienced Australian team Pat Cumminsseveral senior players face one of the toughest tasks of their careers.Australia are scheduled to play a total of 10 Test matches over the 14 weeks between December and March, making it one of the most intense periods in the team’s history. The home summer season begins in August 2026 with two Test matches against Bangladesh and continues until March 2027, concluding with a landmark day-night Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to celebrate the 150th anniversary Test match against the England national cricket team. The four-match Test home series against the New Zealand national cricket team has been compressed into just over a month, adding further pressure to an already tight schedule. Before then, Australia will travel to South Africa for a three-match series until the end of October, followed by an eight-match white-ball series against England in November.According to CA, the India tour is a major challenge for senior players such as Steve SmithMitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, all of whom are yet to win a Test series in India.“The Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour is the final frontier for players like Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon who have never won a series in India and it will also be a quick-fix event given that the CA Anniversary Test will begin in Melbourne on March 11,” CA said in a statement. The board also expressed a cautious approach to workload management, noting that the decision to rest key fast bowlers such as Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood in the early stages of the Indian Premier League reflected concerns about sustaining them through a congested season.“The request to block the entire trio of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood for at least the first few rounds of the upcoming IPL shows that CA are wary of letting their trio reach the finish line in the thick of the 2026-27 season,” the statement added.Australia’s extensive testing schedule includes:August: Two Tests against Bangladesh (home)October: Three Tests against South Africa (away)December-January: Four Tests against New Zealand (home)January-March: Five Tests against India (away)March 11-15: 150th Anniversary Test vs England (home)Looking ahead, if Australia qualify, they could play in the World Test Championship final in June before embarking on a five-Test tour of England between June and August.
