Reform Britain: ‘Melt them and fill the potholes’: Reform UK candidate who made anti-Nigerian rhetoric wins key England seat

Glenn Gibbins, from the Hilton Castle constituency, faced heavy criticism after a series of now-deleted posts resurfaced online following the local election results.Gibbins allegedly wrote in a March 2024 post: “Can’t believe there are so many Nigerians in town…should melt them all down and fill the potholes!!”The comments sparked widespread outrage online, with critics labeling them racist and demanding that Reform UK take responsibility for its choice of candidate.

Posts targeting Muslims and immigrants resurface

Gibbins also allegedly made inflammatory remarks about immigrants and Muslims in several other posts. In one article he called boat migrants “an army of Muslims who will attack us sooner or later”, while another wrote: “Our tolerance is the greatest weapon of the Muslims”.The comments intensify criticism of the Reform Party as it continues to expand its influence in England’s local councils. In addition to her comments about race and immigration, Gibbins has drawn attention for remarks directed at women on television and sports broadcasts. He reportedly described TV presenters Mel and Sue as “the most boring, disgusting fat lesbian presenters ever”.He allegedly complained about a female commentator during Ireland’s rugby match against Japan in 2021, writing: “Hopefully they stick to cooking, sewing and housework.”

Election results spark social media outrage

The resurfaced posts sparked a backlash on X, with users condemning the congressman’s comments and questioning how he was elected amid controversy. One user wrote: “A vile racist… won a seat,” while others blamed Reform UK for failing to properly vet candidates. The controversy comes as reformists scored a landslide victory in England’s local council elections, with voters delivering a major setback to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labor Party.Right-wing populist parties have expanded their influence in several parliaments at the expense of Labour.
