New Delhi: A total of 1,906 candidates are still contesting assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry after the last date to withdraw nominations expired on Friday. 722 candidates are vying for 126 seats in Assam, while 890 candidates are vying for 140 seats in the Kerala Assembly. Puducherry has a total of 294 candidates contesting for its 30 seats. A total of 4,019 nominations were filed by 2,511 candidates across the three states/UTs.
A total of 250 candidates withdrew their nominations before Friday’s 3pm deadline. Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will go to polls in phases on April 9. By-elections for five assembly seats in Karnataka, Goa, Nagaland and Tripura will be held simultaneously, with a total of 49 candidates contesting the elections. The Election Commission said on Friday that election officials should publish the list of candidates contesting in the official gazette in compliance with the requirements of the Electoral Conduct Rules, 1961.
