After countries approve Egypt's nomination, Nabil Fahmy will serve as the next secretary-general of the Arab League and will succeed Aboul Gheit in June

The Arab League Council unanimously approved Egypt’s nomination of former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the next Secretary-General of the Arab League for a five-year term starting on July 1, 2026The decision was taken at the 165th meeting of the Arab League Council hosted by Bahrain and held via video conference. During the meeting, the Egyptian Permanent Mission to the Arab League formally proposed the nomination of Fahmy through a formal memorandum.Fahmy will succeed current Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose second term will end on June 30 this year. He is the only candidate for the position.The 75-year-old Fahmy is a well-known Egyptian diplomat with decades of experience. He served as Egypt’s foreign minister from July 2013 to June 2014 and as Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008.In addition to his diplomatic work, Fahmy also played an important role in the field of education. He founded the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo, where he currently serves as Dean Emeritus. He also made extensive contributions to the study of international relations.He comes from a diplomatic family. His father, Ismail Fahmy, served as Egypt’s foreign minister from 1973 to 1977.The appointment will officially take effect after approval at the Arab Summit in Saudi Arabia, and Fahmy is expected to take office in July 2026.
