An Arizona baby stopped breathing during a post-office visit; former nurse Mary Schwarz performed CPR and helped restore her breathing on the way to hospital

What started as an ordinary stop at a post office in Clifton, Arizona, turned into a life-or-death emergency when an 8-month-old baby stopped breathing. Thanks to the fast response of a former nurse working behind the counter, the child survived long enough to reach medical care.The baby’s mother, Kylie Vega, had brought her daughter Nova to the Greenlee County post office on July 11 to mail a package. Within moments, Vega realised something was seriously wrong. Nova went limp, and Vega said she began patting the baby’s back after noticing she was no longer breathing, as per reports.
A nurse’s instinct kicked in
Help came from an unexpected place: the postal clerk at the counter. Mary Schwarz, who had worked as a nurse for 13 years before becoming a postal clerk, immediately stepped in when she saw the baby in distress.
Schwarz said there was no hesitation; she simply acted.After checking for a pulse and finding none, Schwarz began CPR. When she heard Vega tell the 911 dispatcher that the baby may have tried to vomit and could be choking, she also performed back thrusts to try to clear Nova’s airway.That combination of CPR and airway-clearing efforts was crucial in the first few minutes of the emergency, when every second mattered.
Police arrived within moments
Clifton Police Lt. Shari Aguilar happened to be nearby and responded quickly. She already knew Schwarz had a nursing background, and she immediately joined in to help stabilise the infant.Aguilar then made the decision to get Nova to a nearby clinic as fast as possible rather than wait for an ambulance. Schwarz held the baby in the front passenger seat while Aguilar drove.Nova reportedly began breathing again about halfway to the clinic, before medical staff took over.
She was later transferred to Banner University Medical Center in Tucson for additional treatment.
A frightening moment for a mother
For Vega, the scene was terrifying. She had gone to the post office for something routine, then suddenly found herself watching her baby struggle to breathe. Afterward, she said she was deeply grateful for the people who stepped in so quickly.She praised Schwarz for saving her daughter’s life and said she is thankful that there are still kind people in the world willing to act in an emergency.
Vega also described Nova as “the rainbow” in her life, saying the baby is especially precious after everything she has already been through.
Nova’s health battle didn’t start there
This frightening episode was not Nova’s first medical challenge. Vega said the baby was born with a hole in her heart and without one of the arteries needed to support it. Nova underwent surgery on July 21 to repair the hole, and she remains hospitalised as she recovers, according to Fox 10.That background makes the post office rescue even more remarkable. Nova had already faced serious health issues at just 8 months old, and the timely response from Schwarz and Aguilar helped get her to care when she needed it most.
Why CPR training matters
Schwarz said the experience is a powerful reminder of how important CPR training can be. She noted that emergencies do not just happen in hospitals or on the roadside; they can happen at home, at a pool, or in an everyday place like a post office.Her point is a simple one: knowing what to do before an emergency happens can save a life. In this case, that training made the difference between panic and a rapid, effective response.

The story did not end when Nova reached the hospital. Vega said she and Schwarz have since become Facebook friends, and she continues to keep the former nurse updated on her daughter’s recovery.That ongoing connection gives the rescue a human ending that goes beyond the emergency itself.
