New Delhi: As West Bengal awaits results tomorrow, a switched-off mobile phone was found in an envelope near the vault of Asansol Engineering College, triggering chaos.Apart from the mobile phone, some documents related to the Raniganj Assembly constituency were also found, raising suspicions and triggering a brief ruckus at the spot. A BJP leader alleged that officials were acting in favor of the TMC and expressed concern over possible irregularities.Claiming that someone was trying to enter the premises using a mobile phone, the BJP leader said: “Someone is trying to enter here using a mobile phone. Our men caught him. Cell phone use is prohibited. I don’t know what the police are doing. Cell phones were taken in so we blocked it and that’s why we’re standing here. We don’t tolerate any unethical behavior here. All the officials are from TMC. “The incident came as heavy security personnel were deployed outside vaults across the state to prevent clashes and ensure the safety of EVMs ahead of the counting day.West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said all arrangements were made as per the Election Commission guidelines and a three-tier security system was set up including central forces, local police and state police. He also warned of strict action against any negligence.The development comes against the backdrop of a tense election cycle in the state, marked by allegations of violence, voter intimidation and irregularities during voting. Incidents of clashes and vandalism were reported from several districts including Chhapra, Shantipur, Nimtala and Bangal.In a major move, the Electoral Commission ordered a re-poll in the entire Falta parliamentary constituency, citing “serious electoral crimes” and subversion of the democratic process during the April 29 voting phase. Re-polling also took place at some polling stations in South 24 Parganas under tight security as authorities aimed to restore confidence in the electoral process.The West Bengal assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The results of this high-stakes election will be announced on May 4.
