After Elbers, IndiGo selects former British Airways CEO William Walsh as CEO

Following the resignation of Pieter Elbers last month, airline promoter and managing director Rahul Bhatia took over as CEO on an interim basis with immediate effect. Elbers, then KLM’s president and CEO, was brought in to IndiGo about four years ago to expand its international presence. Elbers submitted his documents despite a significant expansion of the foreign footprint after the plan collapsed in December. Bhatia has said the scheduling debacle “should never have happened.”Now, IndiGo has chosen an industry veteran who can help with its global expansion. Walsh, who will take up the post in August, is a trained pilot who was chief executive of Aer Lingus, British Airways and International Airlines Group, the holding company that owns the two airlines as well as Iberia, Level and Vueling. He began his aviation career in 1979 as a student pilot with Aer Lingus.

William Walsh expected to join IndiGo on August 3

The selection of a pilot-turned-management heavyweight with CEO experience signals that he will be equally focused on operations and expansion to ensure that what happened in December is not repeated. Walsh, also known as Willie, will complete his tenure with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31, 2026, and is expected to join IndiGo on August 3.Rahul Bhatia sent an email to employees on Tuesday informing them of Will’s appointment as CEO, signing it “kuchh hee dino kaa mehmaan.” The email announcing Elbers’ resignation sent on March 10 was signed “main hoon na.”On his appointment, Bhatia said, “I am delighted to welcome Willy to IndiGo as we enter a new phase of transformation and growth. He is an iconic and proven aviation industry leader with a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise in building strong customer-centric airlines, deep industry experience and values-driven leadership, making him ideally suited to lead IndiGo at this critical growth point.”“I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The aviation industry is evolving rapidly and IndiGo is well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to working with colleagues across the organization to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders,” said Walsh.
