Hoshiarpur: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest outside the Punjab district Congress committee office on Friday in response to opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa’s remarks against the state minister. Harbhajan Singh.Led by party leaders, including ministers and MLAs, AAP members staged a sit-in and raised slogans to condemn Bajwa’s remarks. Protests also took place outside the residences of Congress leaders at some places.In Hoshiarpur, the protest was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Jai Krishan Singh Rouri and some party MPs.The ruling party even arranged for a wedding band to play during the demonstrations as a symbolic protest against Bajwa’s alleged derogatory remarks.Addressing a rally in Hoshiarpur, the AAP leader called Bajwa’s remarks “unfortunate and unacceptable” and demanded an apology from him. They said they would continue to oppose him on the issue in the upcoming budget session of the Punjab Assembly.Bajwa accused minister Harbhajan Singh of corruption and said he would be held accountable once Congress forms the government. “Jehra pehle band vajaanda reha, ehda band asin vajaavange (He was a band player and will be taken on a mission by us),” Bajwa said of Singh.In response, Harbhajan Singh criticized Bajwa, saying it was shameful to mock honest, hard-earned livelihood. He noted that his father was a band director who worked hard to educate his children.Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi took note of Bajwa’s remarks. Bajwa’s lawyer said on Wednesday that the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly did not make any objectionable remarks against Harbhajan Singh.Bajwa’s denial was made through his lawyer Arvind Kumar Sachdeva. Sachdeva appeared before the chairman of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Harbhajan Singh.Meanwhile, Luli told reporters at a protest in Hoshiarpur that such language did not suit the BJP. “It is not appropriate in a democracy to comment on someone’s background or profession. Such language has no place in Punjab,” he said.Lurie added that Bajwa’s remarks hurt the sentiments of the working class. He emphasized that Harbhajan Singh came from a humble background and achieved success through hard work, stressing that disrespecting any profession was against Punjabi culture.“Traditionally, bands are associated with celebration and the dignity of labor. Targeting someone for such work reflects a narrow-minded mentality,” he said.Lurie further said political opposition should be based on issues and policies, not personal or derogatory connotations.In Ludhiana, the AAP protested outside the office of Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, with minister Hardeep Singh Mundian leading the demonstration. Mundian condemned the language used by congressional leaders.AAP demonstrators also held protests in other areas, including Sri Muktsar Sahib, Moga, Bathinda, Amritsar and Jalandhar, further highlighting their dissatisfaction.
