How does the new IRS tax fraud reporting system work?

In the past, taxpayers often had to view multiple pages or fill out separate forms depending on the type of fraud or scam they wished to report. According to the IRS, this structure makes reporting challenging and slows down the processing of reports.

The new system is designed to make it easier for information providers to play an active role in stopping any fraud, reducing processing delays and enhancing enforcement efforts. “Improvements to the IRS fraud reporting system make it easier and simpler to report suspected misconduct and will address historic challenges that have prevented the IRS from fully utilizing the referrals it receives,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano.

The platform has been rebuilt to consolidate multiple reporting channels into a user-friendly portal where taxpayers can submit details about any suspected fraud, identity theftunreported income or other illegal financial activities.

The IRS also notes that all submissions will be kept confidential and there will be no penalties for reporting in good faith.
