Varanasi: Police have registered a theft case against three women for allegedly stealing underwear worth around Rs 10,000 from a shop in Chetganj district, a police official said on Friday.Chetganj station officer Vijay Kumar Shukla said that according to shop owner Sudeep Singh, the theft took place on February 24 when three women came to his shop.“When the saleswoman went in to get the items, the women allegedly stuffed underwear worth about Rs 10,000 into their bags,” he said, citing the complaint.“Singh discovered the theft during stock verification and subsequently lodged a complaint with the Chitganj police station,” he said.The shop owner submitted CCTV footage of the incident.Investigators have identified one of the women accused, who previously served as president of the traders’ association.After an alleged video of the incident went viral, one of the accused, Sunita Soni, issued a statement in her defence.She said she went to the market and the woman accompanying her was from Jaunpur.She claimed that some items were out of stock in the store and she left her mobile phone number there to pick them up a week later.“I have no idea what the woman accompanying me may have taken from the store. I will fully cooperate with the store owner and police management,” she said. PTI
