Indian-American lawyer and U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Harmeet K Dhillon of the Justice Department said she is an immigrant who came to the United States on a visa, but the idea that the government funds agencies that disproportionately hire H-1B visas and other legal immigrant visa categories when there are actually Americans available to fill those positions is problematic. Dhillon made the comments on Christopher Rufo’s podcast as the H-1B visa program, which allows companies to hire Indians and Chinese and other skilled professionals from foreign countries, faces growing resistance. Dhillon is quite active on social media, and every time H-1B abuse is reported, she responds — promising action or seeking more details. “I’m an immigrant. I’m grateful that my family was able to come to this country. My father is a doctor. He spent most of his career providing health care in rural communities. I think this is an important role because, frankly, American medical schools are not producing enough physicians to serve all of our institutions. “
“But why wouldn’t they? We should solve this problem and make foreign medical graduates, foreign engineers, foreign CEOs the exception, not a sizable portion of the population. I think this problem needs to be solved by our society and the needs need to change,” Dhillon said. The Indian-born Trump administration official said it was a conservative and liberal issue. “I’ve lived in Silicon Valley for decades and been a lawyer there for decades, and from an economic perspective it makes a lot of sense for U.S. companies to exploit foreign labor,” Dillon said. “It’s cheaper, and you have a fiduciary responsibility to your bottom line to produce your widgets for the least amount of money, and that’s what they’re doing.” There are more problems that need to be solved, and the rest of the problems are not in the hands of the Justice Department.
