'Pakistan PM will die...': Donald Trump got it wrong in State of the Union address - and what he meant
US President Donald Trump

New Delhi: In his State of the Union address, US President Donald Trump claimed that “without my involvement, the Prime Minister of Pakistan would have been dead”, seemingly misquoting him while referring to military tensions between the two nuclear-armed states, India and Pakistan, in May 2025.However, it was unclear whether this was his intention, as he continued to describe his role in preventing wider conflict. Trump cited praise from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, suggesting he had saved “35 million” people and portraying himself as central to easing military tensions.“In my first 10 months in office, I ended eight wars… There could be a nuclear war between Pakistan and India. 35 million people said that without me, the Prime Minister of Pakistan would die…” Trump said in his speech. While he seemed to be wrong, what he seemed to be saying in his longest State of the Union address ever was that Pakistan’s prime minister claimed that without Trump’s involvement, 35 million people would have died. The U.S. president has repeatedly praised himself for bringing India and Pakistan to the negotiating table and averting a larger conflict. However, India has firmly rejected any suggestion of third-party mediation to ease tensions. operation sindorIts military campaign against cross-border terrorism is in retaliation for Pakistan-backed Pahalgam terror attack.
