New Delhi: The national naming agency led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has changed the names of nine metro stations in Delhi.According to a statement from the chief minister’s office, the authorities considered proposals to change the names of 21 metro stations, retaining 12 metro stations, revising seven metro stations and renaming two metro stations.Gupta said the names of metro stations were finalized based on public sentiment and local characteristics.The revised station names are: Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar (formerly Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur-Wazirabad (formerly Jagatpur), Nanak Pyau-Drawal Nagar (formerly Derawal Nagar), Khanpur-Vayusainabad (formerly Khanpur), Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar (formerly Sonia Vihar), Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (formerly Mayur Vihar Pocket) 1) and Mangalpurkaran-Western Enclave (earlier Western Enclave).Besides, North Pitampura was renamed as Hydepur village and Pitampura was renamed as Madhuban Chowk in line with the local identity, the statement said.The names originally proposed to be retained in the detailed project report were: Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali and Maujpur-Babarpur.The chief minister said metro stations are not just transport hubs but reflect the character and cultural significance of the areas they serve. Therefore, each name was finalized after careful consideration.Key factors were discussed when finalizing the names, including the local character, historical, social and cultural significance of the areas, as well as suggestions from local public representatives and citizens, she said, adding that these suggestions would also be considered in future if deemed justified.
