‘Gift from Venezuela’: Donald Trump says oil deal will help refill ‘virtually emptied’ US strategic reserve
Donald Trump said the process of refilling the reserve would begin shortly

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said oil secured under a recently announced deal with Venezuela would be used to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), which has been drawn down sharply in recent years amid global supply disruptions and high fuel prices. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the process of refilling the reserve would begin shortly, describing the Venezuelan oil as a “Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States.”“One of the things I am going to do with the Venezuelan Oil is fill up the Strategic National Reserves which, because of Sleepy Joe Biden, has been virtually emptied,” Trump wrote.“The ‘topping out’ process will begin very shortly, and is a Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States”, he added.

SPR near a 44-year low

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve held about 290 million barrels of oil as of August 21, near a 44-year low, according to Reuters. The stockpile was drawn down under both the Biden and Trump administrations in response to global supply disruptions, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the conflict with Iran.It remains unclear how quickly the Venezuela deal could supply oil to the reserve or provide any near-term benefit to US motorists.Trump announced the agreement with Venezuela on Friday as part of efforts to revive the South American country’s battered oil industry. However, significant investment and infrastructure work would be required before Venezuelan production can rise substantially.

What is known about the Venezuela deal

The US government and an unnamed private operator in Venezuela have formed a new company that has been granted rights to untapped oil fields for 100 years.A statement from Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez said the agreement involves the development of 17 fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels. Also read: What we know about Trump’s ‘biggest oil deal in world history’She said the deal could attract $100 billion in investment into Venezuela’s oil industry and generate more than $209 billion in taxes for Caracas.According to a US official cited by news agency AP, the United States will receive 55% of the new company’s effective output, including an ownership stake and rights to buy oil at cost.Oil purchased by the US would go towards the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as well as the military. However, several key details remain unclear, including the identity of the private operator, who will fund the required infrastructure investments and how the US stake in the company will be structured.

Will the deal lower US fuel prices?

The agreement is not expected to deliver an immediate increase in Venezuelan oil production.Experts believe that Venezuela’s ageing and damaged oil infrastructure would require years and billions of dollars in investment to repair.“It’s going to take time — many years — to deploy that much capital and produce the kind of incremental results that history suggests possible,” Kevin Book, managing director at ClearView Energy Partners, told AP.The average price of petrol in the US stood at about $4.08 a gallon on Saturday, compared with $3.20 at the same time last year, according to AAA data.Trump has said the Venezuela agreement will help lower fuel prices for Americans, but the immediate impact remains unclear as the country’s oil sector would need substantial investment before production can increase significantly.
