US revokes visa of former Mexico President’s son: What led to the decision and why López Beltrán is questioning Trump
Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says the United States has revoked its objective, prompting him to appeal directly to President Donald Trump and demand an explanation for the decision.
López Beltrán announced the development on Instagram on Thursday, August 13, saying he had received a communication informing him that his US visa had been canceled. He then published a three-page letter addressed to Trump from Teapa, Tabasco.
The reason for the visa revocation has not been publicly disclosed by the US government. López Beltrán, however, has offered his own explanation: he claimed the decision was politically motivated and accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau of ordering it.
That allegation has not been independently confirmed.
Why was López Beltrán’s US visa revoked?
At this stage, there is no publicly confirmed US government explanation for the cancellation.
In his letter, López Beltrán said Rubio and Landau had ordered the withdrawal of his authorization to enter the United States. He described the decision as political and “propagandistic,” arguing that there was no evidence of an immoral or criminal act against him.
He also questioned whether Trump himself knew about the decision.
López Beltrán asked the president whether he was aware of the visa cancellation and, if he was not, suggested that Trump should consider removing Rubio, Landau and other officials whom he accused of acting against political figures who do not align with their views.
The letter contains López Beltrán’s allegations and characterization of the decision, rather than an official explanation from Washington.
The lack of a stated reason is significant because the US government has previously revoked visas belonging to Mexican political figures without publicly explaining the grounds for individual cases. Reporting in 2025 noted that US officials had declined to provide reasons for several such visa actions.
Who is Andrés Manuel López Beltrán?
López Beltrán, widely known as “Andy,” is the son of López Obrador, who served as Mexico‘s president from 2018 to 2024 and founded the ruling Morena movement.
López Beltrán was previously Morena’s secretary of Organization, a position that gave him a prominent role in the party founded by his father. He left the party leadership earlier this year as he prepared to pursue a federal congressional seat from Tabasco in Mexico’s 2027 midterm elections, according to Mexican media reports.
His political prominence has made him a closely watched figure within the Morena movement, particularly because of his family connection to the former president.
What López Beltrán said about Rubio and Landau
López Beltrán’s letter goes well beyond simply asking why his visa was canceled.
He accused Rubio and Landau of pursuing a political agenda against Morena and other Mexican politicians. He also alleged that US officials had targeted people they viewed as “communists,” security threats or “narco-terrorists.”
He called the reported visa cancellation an abuse of power and argued that it was part of a broader hostile approach toward Mexico.
López Beltrán also criticized what he described as US political lobbying and influence, alleging that some American political figures receive financial support from arms dealers and other powerful interests. Those claims were presented in his letter but were not supported by evidence in the document.
