Former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread to his bones and is causing him pain, his son Hunter Biden said in a BBC interview broadcast late Friday.
Hunter Biden became emotional while discussing his father’s condition, describing it as “really sad to watch.”
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” he said. “It’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”
When did Biden reveal his cancer diagnosis?
Biden, 83, the oldest person to serve as US president, revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House.
On May 16, 2025, Biden’s office announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer after a “small nodule” was found on his prostate. The cancer had already metastasized to his bones.
In the days following the announcement, Biden wrote on X that “cancer touches us all,” sharing a photo of himself with former first lady Jill Biden and their cat, Willow.
“Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places,” he wrote. “Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”.
Jill Biden, 75, has since said her husband will “forever live with cancer” because the disease had spread to his bones before it was detected.
“We have to be mindful of it every three months, testing and medicines,” Jill said in an interview with SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa on Aug. 5. “And anybody who’s gone through this cancer journey — and I’ve been through it many times with members of my family, of course with Beau — it’s constant. It’s daily. And I think it’s challenging.”
‘Sad to watch’
Hunter Biden said his father’s diagnosis has been difficult for the family.
“It’s really sad to watch,” Biden said. “The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good.”
But Biden said his father remains “out there,” speaking publicly about the issues that are important to him.
“He’s still doing his thing,” he said. “He so believes in this country.”
Biden’s upcoming memoir
The former president is also preparing to publish a memoir, Promise Me, America, which is expected to be released after the 2026 midterm elections.
