Every year, as the seasons change, millions of birds make one of nature’s greatest journeys. Some fly only a few hundred kilometers, while others fly thousands of kilometers without recognizing political boundaries or national boundaries. Instead, they follow ancient migration routes known as flyways, which are natural aerial corridors determined by geography, climate, and the availability of food and resting places.One of the most important routes in the world is the Central Asia Route (CAF). It is approximately 9,000 kilometers long and connects the breeding grounds of northern Eurasia to the wetlands, forests, grasslands and coastlines of South Asia. This migratory route supports hundreds of migratory bird species in 30 countries and has become an important lifeline for birds traveling between Europe, Asia and the Indian Ocean each year.
Migration routes across mountains, deserts and oceans
The Central Asian Flyway extends southward from the Arctic Ocean and Siberia through Central Asia to countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.Rather than following a narrow path, migratory routes consist of a network of interconnected habitats where birds can rest, feed and breed during different stages of their migration. These include high-altitude lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, wetlands in Kazakhstan, floodplains, coastal estuaries and mangroves in India.according to Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wildlife (CMS)The migration route is home to more than 600 species of migratory birds, including cranes, geese, ducks, shorebirds, raptors and songbirds. Many of these species rely on the same wetland chains and stopovers each year, so the health of each habitat is critical to the success of their migrations.
Home to some of the world’s highest migrating birds
One of the most striking features of this migratory route is that it includes the migration path of the bar-headed goose, a bird famous for flying over the Himalayas and has been recorded flying at altitudes exceeding 7,000 metres. At these altitudes, oxygen levels are only a fraction of those at sea level, but the species has evolved specialized lungs, efficient blood circulation and powerful muscles, allowing it to survive one of the most arduous migrations on Earth.Other iconic migratory birds that use the Central Asian flyway include the Siberian crane, flamingo, Amur falcon, black-tailed godwit, and several species of ducks and wading birds that winter in the Indian subcontinent.Researchers continue to study these migrations using satellite tracking, GPS transmitters and bird song programs, revealing in increasing detail maps of the extraordinary journeys the birds make each year.
Why protecting flight paths is important
Since migratory birds pass through multiple countries on a single journey, protecting the Central Asian Flyway requires international cooperation. Wetland destruction, pollution, climate change, illegal hunting and habitat fragmentation threaten many of the stopovers where birds rely to rest and replenish energy.Recognizing these challenges, countries in the region are working together through the Central Asian Flyway Action Plan under the Convention on Migratory Species to improve habitat protection, strengthen scientific monitoring and coordinate cross-border conservation efforts.Scientists emphasize that the benefits of protecting flyways extend far beyond birds. Healthy wetlands help reduce flooding, improve water quality, store carbon and support fisheries and local livelihoods. So protecting this giant aerial highway not only protects one of the world’s great wildlife wonders, but also protects the ecosystems that millions of people depend on every day.
