According to the Irish Independent, Glen Hansard’s family first said in a statement: “It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Glenn Hansard, who passed away following a road traffic accident in Dublin early this morning.”

In a 2023 interview with The Irish Times, he described becoming a father as a life-changing experience. Speaking about becoming a father, Hansard said: “For 52 years I was the most important person in my life and then all of a sudden my perspective completely changed and I absolutely loved it”. He added, “To serve this young mind, this young life, is — I can’t believe I haven’t done this before. When the student is ready, doesn’t the teacher show up?”

Hansard explains how he later became a father. “I’ve always been the guy in the band, so I was just busy writing my story and creating my life and moving on,” he said. He said meeting his wife changed everything. “Of course, I thought there was an opportunity, but it wasn’t on my list of things to do. And then I met Mel and was like, oh, that’s the mother of my kids.”
Hansard also described this period as one of the happiest in his life. “Is this the happiest time of my life? I would say it’s probably the most adventurous and engaging time of my life so far,” he told The Irish Times in 2023.
How Glenn Hansard’s family supported his career
Hansard said of that moment in a 2015 interview that his mother asked a bank manager for a loan so he could record his first demo. According to the Irish Independent, the record helped introduce his music to key people in the industry and marked an important step in the beginning of his career.
Before his death, Hansard planned to Norway He also visited Sweden before embarking on an Irish tour in October, RSVP Live reported. The Irish tour was scheduled to include shows in Cork, Limerick, Killarney, Sligo, Galway and Belfast, making his death an unexpected loss for his family, fans and the Irish music community.
