New subpoenas have been issued to several social media companies and a location tracking app in connection with pending litigation nolan wells‘ die. Mississippi State Attorney Gary Bufkin issued a subpoena on Tuesday, July 28, seeking information from accounts linked to Wells on Snapchat, WhatsApp, TikTok, Meta Platforms and the location-tracking app Life360, according to records reviewed by the Sun-Herald.

Bufkin is an attorney with the law firm of Carroll Bufkin PLLC in Richland. He is assisting Ben Crump in his independent investigation into Wells’ death.

The records subpoenaed include all subscriber information, all current and previous usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, and display names associated with each account; as well as other account-related information, including the following:

  • Account creation date and IP address used to create the account
  • All IP addresses associated with account operations, including logins, password resets, and two-step sign-up
  • All IP addresses associated with friend activity on the account
  • All communications configured as public and all associated data and metadata
  • All non-content information related to the account
  • Any information that identifies or can be used to identify anyone sending messages in an account conversation
  • All correspondence, chats, posts, stories, other information, etc.

The subpoenas come after Mississippi attorneys sent letters of intent to prosecute to Wells’ friends, their families, local law enforcement and prosecutors, the coroner and the state medical examiner’s office and other agencies involved in the investigation into the teen’s sudden death.

Those who receive notice of potential litigation are required to retain the original, unaltered form of all evidence in their possession, custody, or control. Recipients are also instructed to suspend any automatic deletion or overwriting functions that may destroy evidence.

New legal documents obtained by the outlet show that Wansley filed a petition on Monday to open her son’s estate and appoint her as administrator, noting that the estate’s assets would “include only damages arising out of the circumstances of his death.” If someone is eventually legally found in connection with her son’s death, Wansley will have the right to sue on behalf of her son’s estate.

Wansley signed the petition in Jackson County Chancery Court on the day of Wells’ funeral. According to the documents, the teen had no will, never married and had no children, making his mother his sole heir.
