Birds’ sounds may vary, but scientists have now discovered that many of their songs are made up of the same basic sound patterns. A new global study has discovered eight recurring themes in the songs of thousands of bird species. It also explains why birds that live in forests sing differently than those that live in open areas.According to research, birdsong is shaped by both evolution and environment. A bird inherits many characteristics of its song from its ancestors, and where it lives also plays an important role. Dense forests, humidity and long communication distances can affect how sounds travel, causing birds to use songs that are easier to hear.

The findings, published in the journal Science and reported by Science X, are based on one of the largest studies of bird song ever conducted. The researchers analyzed more than 116,000 song recordings of 3,160 passerine species collected from around the world through citizen science projects.

Global Birdsong Framework

Birdsong is more than just a pleasant background sound. Birds use song to attract mates, defend territories, and communicate with competitors or neighbors. For these messages to be useful, the sound must carry the message and travel smoothly through the environment until it reaches another bird.Scientists have studied bird song for many years, but most early studies focused on simple measurements, such as pitch or frequency. Researchers say this approach misses many of the important details that make each song meaningful.In this study, birdsong was viewed as information rather than just sound. In addition to looking at pitch, the scientists also analyzed frequency and temporal changes in each song. This allowed them to compare the songs of thousands of species using the same method.

Why choose passerines?

The researchers studied passerine birds, also known as perching birds or songbirds. Passerine birds include more than 6,000 species, accounting for more than 60% of all birds on Earth.Additionally, they are found in nearly every terrestrial habitat, from tropical rainforests to open grasslands and mountains. Because they live in such diverse environments, they help understand how habitat affects bird song on a global scale.The recordings used in the study came from an open-source citizen science database, allowing researchers to study bird communication across continents.

Eight components of birdsong

To compare the songs, the scientists used automated sound analysis methods. They examined each recording using modulation power spectroscopy, a technique that measures changes in sound over time and at different frequencies.According to the analysis, most bird songs are composed of eight recurring sound themes. These patterns are the building blocks that birds combine in different ways, much like musicians weave notes into different melodies.The eight themes include three vibratos played at different speeds, three whistles with different pitch variations, and two more complex sounds described as atonal chaos stacks of notes and harmonies.Most species use more than one theme in their songs. In fact, researchers have found that a single song typically contains between two and eight themes.However, one theme often dominates. The researchers found that 65.3% of the species used their main theme in more than 80% of their songs. The remaining 34.7% of species used a wider combination of themes, resulting in greater variation in their songs.

Location affects singing

After identifying eight themes, the researchers looked at where different song patterns were most common. They found that birds that communicate over long distances often rely on simpler sounds. These include flat whistles and slow trills, which travel farther without losing clarity.On the other hand, birds that communicate over shorter distances often produce faster, more complex songs. These include ultra-fast vibrato and harmony stacks, which carry even more information. However, they are more susceptible to deformation when moved.Researchers say this suggests there is a trade-off. Birds can emit highly detailed songs that contain more information, or they can emit simpler songs that are better able to spread over long distances.

Rainforest and open landscape challenges

The study also found differences between tropical and temperate regions. Birds living in tropical rainforests often use simple songs. Dense vegetation and moist air make it difficult for complex sounds to travel without distortion. Therefore, birds in these habitats select sounds that remain clear even after traveling through dense forest.In contrast, birds living in temperate areas use faster, more complex whistles and trills. Scientists say these sounds are more easily corrupted at greater distances, but birds use them because they may not need to communicate across such long distances.The researchers believe the difference may also be related to intense mating competition in temperate regions.

Although habitat affects a bird’s song, the researchers found that evolution remains the strongest influence. By comparing bird songs to family relationships, physical traits and mating systems between species, the team found that phylogeny, or evolutionary history, explained 82% of the variation in song themes.The study also found smaller but consistent differences related to mating systems. Species in which one male mates with multiple females are more likely to use certain rapidly changing whistles and other complex song patterns.This suggests that birdsong develops through a combination of genetic traits, environmental conditions and behavior.
