‘We will mint it’: Nepal central bank confirms one-rupee coin with controversial map after government U-turn
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central bank of Nepal, announced on Saturday that it will mint a new one rupee coin Among them is a controversial map showing the territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, which are disputed with India.Kathmandu claims the territories as its own, while New Delhi insists they are part of Uttarakhand and says the issue should be resolved through bilateral dialogue.“NRB has not officially received the new design of the coin but we are sure that it will include a map,” spokesman Guru Prasad Paudel said, according to PTI.“We will issue a new one-rupee coin. However, its size and metal will be changed, making it smaller and lighter than the previous coins,” Podel added.

On July 20, Nepal’s government, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician, approved replacing the map of Nepal on coins with an image of a monastery.However, the government later decided to keep the map, reportedly due to pressure from the opposition and the public.As part of the redesign, the controversial political map will be removed from the coins and replaced with an image of Rogaka Temple in Malang Village, Mustang District. The monastery is considered to be one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Nepal.The then KP Sharma Oli-led government included these territories in the official map of Nepal in May 2020.(with PTI input)
