Google parent company Alphabet has increased its artificial intelligence spending plans for 2026. Spending is now expected to be between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from the previous estimate of $180 to $190 billion and up from the previous estimate of $190 billion. This is the largest capital expenditure plan in Alphabet’s history. The midpoint of the new forecast is $200 billion, which shows how serious the company is about winning the AI race.

The money will mainly be used to build more Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure. This includes new data centers, powerful computer chips, servers and other computing systems needed to run artificial intelligence models like Gemini. Google said it is increasing spending as demand for artificial intelligence grows much faster than expected, according to multiple news reports. Businesses want more AI services, but Google doesn’t yet have enough computing power to meet all the requests.

Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi said the company has significantly expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities over the past three years. Still, she said customer demand is higher than what Google can currently offer.

ashkenazi says Google According to Reuters, new computing power is coming online faster than expected. As demand remains very strong, the company decided to further increase spending. She also warned that spending could continue to rise in 2027. This means Google is preparing for significant AI investments in the coming years.

Google Cloud is biggest reason for spending

A major reason behind the larger investment is the strong growth of Google Cloud. More and more companies are paying for AI-powered cloud services. In the April-June quarter, Google Cloud revenue increased 82% year-on-year to approximately $24.8 billion. That was well above analysts’ expectations.

CEO Sundar Pichai said the cloud business is driven by strong demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions, according to Bloomberg. Google Cloud has become one of Alphabet’s fastest-growing businesses. AI startups and large companies are using Google’s cloud platform to build and run AI applications. Despite its rapid growth, Google Cloud still lags behind Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in the cloud market.

Alphabet’s cloud backlog – work that customers have signed contracts for but has not yet become revenue – rose to $514 billion from about $460 billion in the previous quarter. Google said more than half of its cloud backlog is expected to be converted into revenue within the next two years.

How is Google’s overall business performing?

Alphabet reported total revenue of approximately $119.8 billion for the quarter. This shows that the company’s overall business remains strong. Advertising remains Google’s biggest business. According to Reuters, the company had revenue of $81.6 billion in the quarter.

Google’s search business has so far remained strong despite growing competition from artificial intelligence chatbots.

Gemini AI remains Google’s largest artificial intelligence project

Google continues to invest heavily in its Gemini AI model. These models compete with ChatGPT, Claude and other artificial intelligence systems. Google has started training Gemini 4. Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said the company was encouraged by its progress.

Pichai described Gemini 4 as a larger, more advanced artificial intelligence model. He said Google is making it a top priority, according to Bloomberg. Google plans to release new artificial intelligence models almost every month after the launch of Gemini 4. Pichai said a faster release schedule would help Google compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Despite strong earnings, investors remain concerned

Although Alphabet reported strong financial results, investors were more focused on its massive spending plans. Alphabet shares fell after the spending announcement. The stock fell about 3.6% in pre-market trading, while Reuters also reported weakness in after-hours trading.

Investors worry that spending so much money will reduce profits in the short term. They want clearer evidence that AI investments will generate adequate returns. Heavy spending on artificial intelligence resulted in negative free cash flow for Alphabet, with an outflow of $5.9 billion in the quarter. Adjusted earnings per share were $2.85, slightly below analysts’ expectations.

Investing.com senior analyst Thomas Monteiro said investors were less receptive to larger spending plans. He said that as Bloomberg noted, rising interest rates and a shortage of AI infrastructure have investors concerned that Google may not be able to fund such spending forever.

AI competition is becoming increasingly fierce

Google is competing directly MicrosoftAmazon, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic compete to build the best artificial intelligence system in the world. These companies are spending record amounts on AI infrastructure. They are building data centers, buying artificial intelligence chips and expanding computing power.

According to Bloomberg, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon have previously said they will invest up to $725 billion in artificial intelligence this year. Alphabet’s higher forecast means the total could increase further. Reuters reports that the broader technology industry is expected to spend well over $700 billion on artificial intelligence this year, and spending next year may exceed $1 trillion.

Alphabet spent $44.92 billion in capital expenditures in the second quarter alone. That was higher than Wall Street expected.

Google’s decision to spend up to $205 billion shows that artificial intelligence has become a top priority for the company. The funds will be used to build data centers, purchase artificial intelligence hardware, expand computing capabilities, and support Gemini AI and Google Cloud.
