Ramin Yamal’s quote of the day: "My mother gave birth to me when she was 16, and my father tried his best to..." - A powerful lesson on perspective, family sacrifice and why football isn't the toughest battle his family has faced

Pressure is often discussed in football circles, usually in relation to missed opportunities and the expectations of spectators. Spanish teenage forward Lamine Yamal measures his pressure on something else entirely. “My mom had me when she was 16, and it was really stressful,” he said. “My dad had to figure out life, go pick things up on the streets. All I had to do was play football.” When asked to explain the importance of leading the national team, he directed the question at his own family, refusing to let his situation (albeit an amazing one at nineteen) be seen as the hardest thing anyone in his family had actually ever experienced, given what his parents had been through in the years before he played professionally.

Ramin Yamal’s Quote of the Day

“My mother had me when she was 16 and my father was trying to find ways to bring food home. It was really stressful. All I had to do was play football”

The Moment Behind Lamin Yamal Quotes

Yamal spoke as Spain prepared for the 2026 World Cup, which Spain then won 1-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19, just before he turned 19. Under pressure from his leadership team, he completely redirected the question: “Don’t paint me as if what I was experiencing was real stress. There are people who experience much more stress.”

The family story behind the words

His mother, Sheila Ebana, reportedly gave birth to Yamal when she was 16, having moved to Catalonia from Bata, Equatorial Guinea. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, came to Spain from Morocco as a child and eked out a living by scavenging scraps and other day jobs. The couple separated when Yamal was about three years old, and he grew up mainly in Rocca Fonda, a working-class neighborhood in Mataro, living in a small apartment where the kitchen and bedroom were actually one room.

What the comparison is actually doing

Yamal doesn’t describe professional football as easy. Reaching the top of the sport at the age of nineteen requires years of relentless training and competing against older, more experienced athletes. What he’s doing is placing that effort next to a completely different pressure, the pressure of becoming a parent at sixteen, or the pressure of raising enough money to support a family. Beyond that, he treats his job, difficult as it is, more like a privilege than a burden.

Why this reflects more than just humility

Public success can easily narrow someone’s horizons until their own difficulties become the only thing that matters. Yamal’s comments are exactly the opposite. Although he is one of the most talked-about young players in the world, he puts his challenges into the context of what his parents actually went through when they first offered him the chance.

Other things Ramin Yamal said

  • “It’s so touching to see my brother so happy, to see my mother living the life she always dreamed of, and my friends doing the same. It’s a child’s greatest dream.”
  • “I love my brother. I love him like a son.”

Why this still resonates beyond football

Most people compare their struggles to others’ struggles at some point, but this rarely makes the struggle go away. What it can do is add context. Yamal was performing under enormous public attention at the age of nineteen, and his own difficulties were real. He just chooses to measure it against what he considers to be bigger things and thinks his own work looks small in comparison.
