Is Pakistan ready to make Gilgit-Baltistan its fifth province? Amid ongoing unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the Gilgit-Baltistan parliament passed a resolution urging Islamabad to grant the region interim provincial status, a move that could significantly redefine its administrative structure. The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution, supported by both the ruling and opposition parties, urging Islamabad to grant provisional provincial status to the region, Dawn reported. The resolution, moved by MP Jalal Ali Shah, also sought constitutional and political rights of the people of the hills.Gilgit-Baltistan is located in the Pakistani-occupied Kashmir region and currently has semi-provincial administrative status.Pakistan currently has four provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. If Islamabad accepts the proposal, Gilgit-Baltistan will become the country’s fifth province under the interim arrangement.
