U.S. to reinstate rule not granting green cards to people using public benefits

MIAMI: The Trump administration is reinstating a rule that could deny green cards to immigrants who use public benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid, housing vouchers and more. The “public charge” policy appeared in the Federal Register on Thursday and will be officially released on July 20.The policy, implemented in February 2020, was one of President Trump’s moves to restrict legal immigration during his first administration but was reversed under President Biden. Under the policy, green card applicants must prove that they will not become a burden to the state or become a “public charge.” It’s coming back just as the Trump administration is implementing policies to curb illegal and legal immigration and as health care and food costs rise.
