‘Assassin’ of former B’desh president Ziaur Rehman arrested after 45 years
Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Army Major Muzaffar Hussain – alleged to be prime minister Tariq Rehman’s father and one of the former president’s masterminds and assassins Zia Rahman – Arrested after 45 years on the run.The arrest of Hussain, who allegedly shot the president at the Chittagong Circuit Court on May 30, 1981, marked the first major breakthrough for the six-month-old Tariq-led BNP government in its commitment to hunt down Ziaur Rahman’s assassins, historical records and case documents show.The former police officer was arrested from Dhaka’s Banani DOHS area at midnight on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police said. Government sources said police had handed over Hussain to the Bangladesh Army after completing legal formalities to complete his pending court martial proceedings.In the early hours of May 30, 1981, a group of mid-level military officers attacked the Circuit Building and killed Ziaur Rahman, founder of the ruling BNP Paribas. Officials said Hussein and Captain Moselay Uddin were among the officers directly involved in the assassination.
