Colombian man with Social Security number and work authorization killed by ICE agents in Maine: ‘He was bleeding profusely from the head’
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents allegedly shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian immigrant in Maine. The man was authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number. “He was a member of our community, a neighbor and a man whose life was tragically cut short. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, loved ones and everyone now grieving this unimaginable loss,” the two immigration organizations said in a statement.Daniel Boucher, who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting, told the Portland Press Herald that he was getting ready for work and watched agents remove the driver of a sedan after hearing what sounded like fireworks. “He was bleeding profusely from the head,” Boucher told the Press-Herald. “He was talking. He said, ‘I was trying to stop.'” “No one should have seen what I saw,” Boucher said.Sen. Angus King (D-Maine) told The Associated Press that he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin about the shooting. Mullin reportedly told him the victim had “weaponized” his vehicle.The Maine Attorney General’s Office said an officer with ICE’s Enforced Removal Operations unit was serving a deportation order “when the suspect attempted to flee in a vehicle in the direction of the officer and was shot and killed,” according to a preliminary statement. The attorney general’s office said it is investigating.The Colombian embassy in Washington said it was working to help identify the victims and confirm their nationality.Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the FBI is investigating. “The Biddeford shooting requires a full, impartial investigation into what happened,” she said in a statement.Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain said in a statement that he was “shocked” when he learned of the shooting deaths. He called for a “full, thorough and transparent investigation” with the full participation and cooperation of state law enforcement. “A person has passed away and their loved ones and those in our community deserve clear answers about what happened,” LaFontaine said.Last week, ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant who had lived in Texas for three decades.
