The latest from Mitch McConnell: Sen. Ron Johnson fuels debate over artificial intelligence by calling hospital photo with Elaine Chao ‘older’
End of line kentucky senator Mitch McConnell Although his office released a photo of the 84-year-old in the hospital on July 12, his health showed no signs of relieving.
McConnell was hospitalized on June 12 and has been absent from public view since then, including attending key Senate votes. Led by its prominent spokesperson Laura Loomer, MAGA social media has been abuzz with speculation about the senator’s health. Although the senator’s office insisted he was recovering from his hospitalization, Loomer claimed he was “brain dead,” which his office allegedly concealed. She and several other MAGA commentators asked for proof of life.
That’s exactly what the photo released by his office on July 12 aimed to provide. Pictured here is the 84-year-old Republican with his wife, a former labor secretary Zhao Xiaolanin the hospital. In the photo, McConnell and his wife are smiling, with the senator holding a copy of The Athletic. “Washington Post” July 12 edition. WaPo, in particular, was touted as compelling evidence that the photo was taken on July 12.
Senator claims hospital photos are old
The photo failed to convince MAGA commentators, who insisted it was generated by artificial intelligence, and who called for more conclusive evidence about the senator’s life. While the list had previously been limited to MAGA commentators, a Republican senator from Minnesota echoed those claims on Monday.
Sen. Ron Johnson further claimed that the photo was generated by artificial intelligence, claiming a source told him the photo was older and not taken on July 12, as Mitch McConnell’s office had suggested. Senator Johnson made the above comments on Real America’s show “Boiling!”‘
“Well, I just heard from another source that that was an old photo. So, I really don’t know,” said Sen. Ron Johnson. “I haven’t talked to Mitch yet.”
“I certainly wish him and his family the best. I hope he recovers,” he continued. “Listen, it’s sad to watch people get older, no matter who that person is, you know, I’ve worked with Mitch McConnell for 16 years and, well, obviously disagreed with him on a lot of things. But I also know that he loves this country. He loves the Senate. He respects the Senate.
“So, again, I try to put the best spin on things. I try to look for the best in people. Mitch McConnell also loves this country. So, I wish him the best. I hope he comes back and contributes and votes to support the president’s agenda.”
