After weeks of questions about his health and absence from the Senate, Mitch McConnell is finally speaking out about the medical incident that led to his hospitalization. The 84-year-old man republican The senator from Kentucky has shared his first public photo since leaving Washington, appearing with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

McConnell revealed in a statement to Kentucky residents that he was taken to the hospital after briefly losing consciousness after a fall last month. He also revealed that doctors later diagnosed him with mild pneumonia while he was undergoing treatment.

according to McConnellDoctors ruled out the possibility of a number of serious illnesses that many feared had led to his hospitalization. He said medical tests showed he had no stroke, heart attack, concussion, tumor or bleeding. The senator added that he will continue to undergo examinations and doctors are working to determine the exact cause of his loss of consciousness. The update comes four weeks after he disappeared from public view, according to the Daily Mail.

He also admitted that discussing personal health issues doesn’t come naturally to him.

“You all know that our generation is often hesitant to share in the vulnerabilities that come with age,” McConnell said. “Even in the public eye, I have the same instinct – I can’t control it.”

The longtime senator then explained what happened. McConnell said he has faced mobility challenges since surviving polio as a child, and dealing with those difficulties has become more difficult as he gets older. He revealed that a fall last month resulted in him being hospitalized.

“My doctors have confirmed that I don’t have any broken bones or concussions. I don’t have a heart attack or stroke. I don’t have any tumors or bleeding,” he said.

“But I lost consciousness briefly and was taken to hospital.”

Mitch McConnell’s recovery underway

While being treated, doctors discovered he had mild pneumonia, McConnell said.

The senator said he has followed medical advice throughout his recovery and continues to work with doctors to find answers.

“I can assure you that I am a good patient,” he wrote. “At my age, I tend to do what the doctors tell me to do.”

McConnell added that he has undergone extensive testing and remains focused on recovering as quickly as possible. He also revealed that his condition has improved enough to be discharged from hospital, although doctors are still assessing what may have caused the incident.
