Nigel Farage's approval ratings hit new low amid funding dispute, Count Binface steals show in Clacton poll
British reform leader Nigel Farage and Count Pennface

Opinium polls show Nigel Farage’s personal support has fallen to its lowest level since the 2024 election, with the Reform UK leader facing scrutiny over his party’s finances and political donations. The survey of around 2,000 Britons found Farage’s net approval rating had dropped to minus 27 percentage points, with 52% disapproving of his performance and just 25% approving of it.The poll also found a slight decline in support for the Reform UK party, although the party continues to lead both Labor and the Conservatives in a number of national voting intention surveys.Donations from billionaire Christopher Harborne and convicted fraudster George Cottrell have sparked weeks of controversy, with both men involved in separate disputes over funding linked to Farage and Reform UK.Farage has denied any wrongdoing, accused the political establishment of orchestrating the campaign against him and insisted the investigation was politically motivated.

why is there a Clacton by-election?

The by-election comes after Farage resigned as Clacton MP, with the Reform UK leader arguing voters should be the “judge” of his behavior amid controversy over his political fundingHe described scrutiny of donations as a “stitching of the establishment” and the contest as a battle between ordinary voters and Britain’s political elite.Reuters quoted local authorities as saying the by-election would be held on August 13.

Why are the major parties boycotting the election?

Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and the Greens have all refused to field candidates in the Clacton by-election on 13 August.Parties viewed the vote as a political stunt designed to divert attention from the controversy surrounding Farage’s finances. Their decision leaves the reformist leader facing a field dominated by independent and novel candidates rather than traditional political rivals.

Who is Count Binfas?

With mainstream parties boycotting the contest, Farage’s biggest challenger is expected to be Count Binface, a trash-can helmet-wearing comedian and satirical politician played by comedian Jon Harvey.Since 2019, the self-proclaimed 5,900-year-old space warrior from the planet Sigma IX has become a familiar figure in British elections, often running in high-profile contests against leading politicians.Lord Binface has previously contested the Makefield by-election against former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, London Mayor candidate and most recently Andy Burnham. Despite his comical persona, he campaigned on a tongue-in-cheek manifesto and insisted he was a serious political candidate. His campaign in Clacton has also attracted attention after green energy entrepreneur and Labor Party donor Dale Vince expressed a desire to fund the satirical candidate’s campaign.

A race full of novel candidates

With the UK’s main political parties absent, the Clacton by-election turned into an unusual contest, with a host of eccentric candidates taking part.Expected challengers to Farage include wildlife campaigner Rob Pownall, who campaigned in a full-body fox costume, Mr Fishfinger, who legally adopted his aquatic name by deed, Howling Laud Hope, the veteran eccentric politician of the official Monster Raving Loony Party, and Laurence Fox, the leader of the Recycling Party. With the mainstream opposition absent, the contest quickly became one of Britain’s most unconventional electoral battles, with attention diverted both to Count Pennface’s satirical campaign and Farage’s efforts to regain his seat.
