'Come and help us': Reform urges campaigners to campaign in Clacton as major parties boycott Nigel Farage by-election
British reform leader Nigel Farage

Nigel Farage’s decision to resign as Clacton MP and immediately seek re-election has sparked an extraordinary political row, with Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and several other parties refusing to contest what they said was a “sham” by-election.The controversy has also disrupted Reform UK’s campaign in the high-stakes Greater Manchester mayoral by-election, with party campaigners reportedly switching their support to Farage’s Essex campaign.

Reforms shift campaign resources

A WhatsApp message circulating among Reform UK members in north-west England urged campaigners to abandon campaigning in Greater Manchester and head to Clacton instead.“The message couldn’t be clearer. We need all the fantastic campaigners, branch officers and councilors to help us in Clacton now,” the message read, asking volunteers to sign up for the Essex campaign. The move comes despite Greater Manchester being seen as one of the Reform Party’s biggest electoral chances, with the party achieving a landslide victory in May’s local elections, winning 106 council seats in the region. One Reform MP who received the message claimed the party was “desperate” to rally behind the embattled leader, even if it meant sacrificing its chances in the mayoral race.

Battle for Greater Manchester Reimagined

Andy Burnham resigned after winning the Makefield Council by-election, triggering a Greater Manchester mayoral by-election scheduled for July 30.The Reform Party had hoped to build on a strong local election performance, with opinion polls showing it narrowly trailing Labour. However, the transfer of campaign staff has raised questions about the party’s confidence in its candidate, local businesswoman and TV personality Sian Astley.Labor candidate Bev Craig is now considered the frontrunner in Britain’s biggest-ever mayoral by-election.

Opposition brand Clacton contest ‘stunt’

Farage announced on Tuesday that he would resign his Clacton seat and seek a new mandate, describing the contest as a “people versus the establishment” election with his finances coming under increasing scrutiny and a parliamentary standards inquiry underway. The move drew immediate criticism from rival political parties.Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch dismissed it as a “fake election” aimed at distracting from the investigation.Labor branded the by-election a “circus”, while the Lib Dems described it as “Farage’s vanity project”.Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper accused the reformist leader of engaging in a “political tantrum” to avoid responsibility.“No one will be attracted to Nigel Farage’s political stunts because he wants to sidestep the rules that apply to everyone,” she said.

Reform defends Farage’s move

Reform Britain denies accusations that the by-election is an attempt to evade scrutiny. Party chairman Zia Youssef insisted Farage was putting himself directly before voters rather than waiting for the outcome of standard parliamentary procedures.“The only reason they chose not to field a candidate is because they knew in their hearts that they had little chance of beating him,” Yusuf said of the rival party. He added that Farage would answer questions about his finances but argued that seeking a new mandate from voters was the ultimate test of public confidence.Only fringe challengers remainConstituencies for the Clacton by-election will be restricted as the UK’s major political parties opt out.Confirmations include novelty candidate Count Binfas and former actor Laurence Fox, leader of the right-wing Ennahda Party.Restore Britain, founded by suspended former reformist MP Rupert Lowe, also ruled out running in the election, saying it would only consider running if a second by-election was triggered following a parliamentary inquiry. The Green Party initially left the decision to local branches, but later confirmed it would not field a candidate.Meanwhile, Labor has warned campaigners that challenges to reform in Greater Manchester remain daunting despite a shift in focus following the party’s “catastrophic” local election defeat earlier this year.
