Man builds $15 million solar-powered floating mansion with swimming pool, five king-size suites and roof covered in solar panels

Most luxury yachts are designed by famous naval architects. It started as a personal vision. A private owner conceived and designed a floating home unlike almost anything on the market, then partnered with Louisiana boat builder Breaux Brothers to bring it to life. The result is the GLV-120 Shine Down, a 120-foot-tall aluminum floating mansion with a price tag of $15 million. Featuring a swimming pool, five king-size suites, four residential decks and a roof almost entirely covered in solar panels, the vessel is designed to generate its own electricity while providing the comfort of a luxury beachfront home that can run on its own power.

Inside $15 million Solar floating building

Unlike traditional yachts, the GLV-120 Shine Down is primarily designed as a luxury floating home. It is 120 feet (36.6 meters) long with a beam of approximately 38 feet, offering more than 6,400 square feet of interior living space across four decks. The ship includes five king-size suites, spacious lounges, gourmet kitchens, office areas, multiple entertainment spaces and floor-to-ceiling glass with panoramic water views. Outside, residents can enjoy a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, smokehouse and spacious roof deck. One of the ship’s signature features is its solar energy system. 108 solar panels are installed on almost the entire roof, charging a large lithium iron phosphate battery bank capable of storing more than 300 kilowatt hours of electricity. The system is designed to reduce reliance on shore power by meeting the majority of the ship’s daily power needs. While it can operate for extended periods of time without being plugged into the grid under the right conditions, its actual performance depends on weather, energy consumption and operational requirements.

Designed by owner and built by commercial shipyard

The floating mansion was conceived and designed by its owner, whose identity has not yet been revealed. Rather than hiring a traditional yacht design studio, the owners developed the concept before taking it to Brox Brothers Shipbuilding in Louisiana, a shipyard known for building commercial aluminum ships.Founded in 1982 in Loreauville, Louisiana, Breaux Brothers has been building crew boats, pilot boats, patrol boats and offshore support craft for decades. GLV-120 is one of the company’s most ambitious luxury residential projects to date.

A home that floats more than a superyacht

Although listed on a yacht sales platform, Shine Down is very different from traditional luxury yachts. Its wide beams and multi-level design make it look more like a modern beachfront mansion than a sleek cruiser. The vessel also features two laundry rooms, a lift connecting the decks, luxurious interiors designed by Rita Durio and Associates, multiple outdoor entertaining areas and large expanses of glass that flood the interior with natural light.Unlike permanently moored floating homes, the GLV-120 is fully self-propelled. It is powered by a Cummins QSM11 diesel engine, allowing it to move under its own power rather than relying on tugboats. While it’s not suitable for high-speed cruising, the vessel offers owners the flexibility to change locations without sacrificing the amenities of a full-size luxury home.

Why floating mansions are making headlines

Shine Down is attracting attention not only because of its $15 million price tag, but also because it blurs the lines between architecture, engineering and marine design. Floating homes are growing in popularity in parts of Europe and North America, but few combine residential-scale living space with advanced solar technology and self-propulsion capabilities. Now listed for sale through Worldwide Yacht Sales in Florida, GLV-120 offers a rare opportunity to own one of the most unusual luxury floating homes currently on the market.
