A woman wanted by Interpol in the Monaco bombings is found shot to death near Kiev; two people detained
A Ukrainian woman suspected of planting a parcel bomb targeting a wealthy Ukrainian-born businessman in Monaco last week was found shot to death near Kiev, with Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office later confirming the discovery of the body, Ukrainian news outlet Pravda reported.Police “have detained two persons suspected of murdering a woman wanted by Interpol,” the Ukrainian National Police said in a statement, identifying the victim as “Ukrainian citizen Anastasia Berezovska.” One of the suspects is an official of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Service (HUR), and the other is a former law enforcement official. The news outlet reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the woman was found with a gunshot wound near 11 pm local time on Monday near the Ukrainian capital. The woman was identified as 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska, who was listed as the main suspect in a red notice issued by Interpol at the request of Monaco.Berezovska, a German-speaking Ukrainian citizen, is wanted for “attempted murder, intent to commit a crime, planting an explosive device in a public place and conspiracy to commit a crime,” according to the notice. An INTERPOL Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies around the world to locate and provisionally arrest a suspect awaiting extradition.French prosecutors allege that Berezovska, who had been living in Germany, “dressed as a man” and then planted an explosive device in the entrance hall of her apartment building in Monaco.Monaco’s deputy prosecutor said the attacker fled the principality on foot to neighboring France and then traveled by car through several European countries, including Italy, before finally reaching Germany. The target of the attack was 58-year-old Vadym Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian-born Dnipro real estate developer who had been living in Monaco. Yermolayev, his partner and their 13-year-old son were injured in the explosion.According to Reuters, Yermolayev renounced his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019 and is now a Cypriot citizen. He has been subject to Ukrainian sanctions since 2023 over his business interests in Russia-annexed Crimea. Forbes Ukraine ranked him as the country’s 39th richest person in 2020, estimating his wealth at $230 million.
