The British military said on Sunday that a Caddo ship had been attacked in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a statement that the ship reported “being attacked by unknown armed assailants” 30 nautical miles (55 kilometers) southwest of the coastal city of Hodeidah, according to the Associated Press. The incident is under investigation and there are no further details about the vessel or damage.Additionally, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack as of Sunday afternoon. However, the area is under the control of Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have threatened to start attacking ships again; but there are no reports that they have already started. In the past, since the outbreak of the Gaza war, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked commercial ships near the strategic waterway at the southern entrance of the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait with drones and missiles. The attacks forced many shipping companies to reroute ships around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope instead of using the Suez Canal. At the same time, Somali pirates have recently been operating further out in the Gulf of Aden.
