Muslim nurse in Texas says she won’t treat anyone watching Fox News; university made sure she didn’t have to but fired her after investigation
A Muslim nurse at the University of Texas Medical Branch made a video showing how she would exit a hospital room if she caught Fox News playing in the room. Fox News is a conservative news channel, and the video was intended to be a sharp critique of the current system, but it immediately drew harsh criticism of “Nurse Alam” because doctors are sworn to treat all patients equally and without any bias. When the school learned of the nurse’s video, UTMB announced an investigation and suspended the nurse. “UTMB is aware of the social media post and is investigating. This individual’s employment opportunities at any UTMB facility have been suspended while the investigation is ongoing,” the health center initially said.“Following an investigation into the social media posts, UTMB terminated the contract employee last night,” UTMB announced. But that didn’t end the debate, as social media users said it was UTMB’s responsibility to ensure this never happens again. People have called for tougher action against the nurse and said if she was so biased she should not be working in any healthcare setting. “Thank you @utmbhealth for advocating for patient safety without being politically motivated! Now, I wonder, as an accountable healthcare organization, did you report her behavior to the Texas Board of Nursing? She needs to be disciplined for her egregious behavior,” one wrote.Another wrote: “The fact that she treats people based on her political views speaks volumes about her character as a person, she is definitely not the type of person I would want anyone to care for alone and she would definitely kill any patient because of her political views.”“While I can understand the firing, it speaks volumes about a culture and should be investigated beyond this person. How did someone like this get hired in the first place?” wrote another.“You need to look into your hiring process. Hopefully this is a misalignment of values and not merit work,” a third user wrote.“Not good enough! You need to rebuild trust, fire all Muslims and let patients know they will be taken care of regardless of their political or religious beliefs! This is absolutely horrific. She needs to be jailed and deported!” added another, calling for all Muslim staff to be fired.
