Nancy Guthrie Update: Derrick Callella pleads guilty

Derrick Callella, 42, has pleaded guilty to two felony charges: one for transmitting a ransom demand across state lines and one for using a telecommunications device to threaten or harass, local NBC affiliate KVOA reported. He needs to complete five years of probation and will be sentenced on September 10.

Callella is from Hawthorne, californiaNancy was arrested on harassment charges shortly after her disappearance. He allegedly contacted Annie and Cioni on February 4 using a fake phone number and asked: “Have you received any bitcoins? [sic] According to Fox News Digital, he is awaiting a deal from our side. ” He reportedly made a nine-second phone call to his family afterward.

“During the course of our investigation, we discovered that Carrera was an imposter seeking to take advantage of the situation,” federal prosecutors said in a statement in mid-February.

Investigators have released doorbell camera footage of the masked man and have submitted DNA samples to the FBI laboratory in Quantico for analysis. However, the suspect’s identity has not yet been made public.

Pima County Sheriff denies Guthrie family involvement

At a press conference in February, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos denied any potential involvement of the Guthrie family. “To be clear … the Guthrie family, including all siblings and spouses, have been ruled out as possible suspects,” he said. “This family has been cooperative and gracious and they are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims, plain and simple.”

FBI provides latest on ransom note

On Wednesday (July 1), the FBI Phoenix X account released a statement regarding the various ransom notes received during the investigation.

“The FBI and its task force partners received several ransom notes during the course of their investigation,” FBI explain. “Some are believed to be unlawful extortion attempts. Other ransom demands may be legitimate and are still under investigation. This case will continue to be investigated as a kidnapping for ransom case.”
