WATCH: Passengers’ sight of Boeing 777 engine catching fire in mid-air goes viral
A video showing a close-up of a Boeing 777 engine failure has resurfaced on social media, with many users sharing it as a recent aviation accident. However, the video is from a United Airlines flight that suffered engine failure shortly after taking off from Denver, Colorado in February 2021.The incident involved United Airlines Flight 328, a Boeing 777-200 flying from Denver to Honolulu with 231 passengers and 10 crew members. Shortly after takeoff, the plane’s right engine failed, forcing the pilot to declare an emergency and return to Denver International Airport, where he landed safely. There were no reports of injuries to passengers, crew or people on the ground. The viral video, shot by a passenger inside the plane, shows the plane’s right engine engulfed in flames and its hood missing while the plane was still in the air.Passenger David Delucia told The Denver Post: “Honestly, I thought we were going to die – because we started losing altitude right after the explosion.”“I grabbed my wife’s hand and said, ‘We’re done’.”The engine failure also caused debris to litter residential areas in Broomfield, Colorado. Police released photos showing a large bonnet outside a home and other debris in a nearby field, urging residents not to touch any debris.“If you find debris, please do not touch or move it. The @NTSB expects all debris to remain in place for investigation,” the Broomfield Police Department said on Twitter.Air traffic control recordings captured the crew declaring an emergency.A United pilot told air traffic controllers: “Mayday, the plane just had an engine failure and needs to turn immediately.”The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation into the incident. Despite the engine failure, the plane landed safely and investigators later examined the damaged engine and debris to determine the cause. The video continues to appear online regularly, but it depicts an emergency involving United Airlines Flight 328 on February 20, 2021, and is not related to any recent aviation incident.
